Room to Talk

Insurance-based psychotherapy through a culturally-sensitive lens

What is Room To Talk?

Room To Talk is a Women’s Center insurance-based counseling program for youth and adults age 16+.

Our licensed therapists use a variety of different approaches. But the one thing they have in common is their emphasis on building a safe and supportive partnership with you.

That partnership may include frank conversations about racial/cultural backgrounds, gender identity and expression, body size, abilities, income level, sexuality, and religious/spiritual beliefs.

Who will be my therapist?

We make every effort to get you matched as soon as possible with the next therapist who has space at the times you are available and who also takes your insurance.

If you are interested in working with a specific therapist, you may indicate your preference. However, the wait may be longer than if you can take the next available opening.

We encourage you to shop around for a therapist you feel comfortable with. It’s important that you get the right match.

Anxiety, depression, stress, post-traumatic-stress, life transitions, loss, relationships. and identity issues are some of the most common challenges that people bring to our counseling/therapy sessions.

How can I pay?

Insurance may be commercial (e.g., Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Blue Care Network, Michigan Cares) or public (e.g., Blue Cross Complete, Washtenaw Health Plan, Medicare).

Rates for counseling in our area range from $150/session for a masters-level counselor or social worker to $250 per session for a psychiatrist (a medical doctor with additional training in pharmacology and mental health).

What are deductibles and copays?

Health insurance covers part of the total expense after you have paid a certain amount towards your health care in a calendar year. The amount that you must pay before your insurance begins to cover the cost (the “deductible”) ranges from $500-$8,000. [Note: If you have Medicaid or Washtenaw Health Plan, these out-of-pocket fees are often not required.]

Your insurance company may also require you to pay something after each session – anywhere from $20 to $50 co-pay or coinsurance. With your permission, we can check your insurance ahead of time and let you know about how much each session will cost.

We reinvest the fees from Room To Talk into our women-supportive programs, which rely on individual contributions and community support.
